My team and I had a great time styling and shooting this beautiful gem in Stratford this past week. We began our photographs in the heart of the house, like most homes, the kitchen. This kitchen is quite literally a Chef’s kitchen as there is not one, but two Chef’s who cook in it. The bright, sunny library is home to countless cookbooks which became the perfect styling object. Its not everyday you can spend the entire day playing tourist in your own town. We are lucky here in Stratford to have so much to do, see, eat and explore. There always seems to be something happening in this small, but mighty town of ours, with Theatre, festivals, events, activities, its hard to keep up. We tend to use the Stratford park systems quite often, we like to check out new parks and meet friends at their local parks. Of course the kids have their favourites: Upper Queens park located in the shady area adjacent to the Festival Theatre, and the Anne Hathaway Splash pad and park located on Downie St.. Last week our air conditioner decided to stop working on us so we spent the entire weekend outside. The weather we are experiencing in September has been feeling more like mid August and it was too hot to be inside the house. We grabbed lunch at one of our favourite restaurants York Street Kitchen on Erie. Only just recently taken over by the restaurant group Windsor Hospitality that own Mercer Hall and also The Prune. Weekday meal times can be stressful in our house. We try to simplify meals and meal prep during the week. This means easy prep, less food items, fast cooking times, and most importantly little clean up. We even have started getting the kids involved with the prep and the clean up. Surprisingly they feel very accomplished to help clear that table, and nothing gets your kids to eat their meal better than having them help with the preparing. This Thai Mango noodle salad is one of our new favourite meals. It can be made ahead and marinate in the fridge or enjoyed right away. We used local mangos (yes!! Local) from The Little Green Grocer. We have also made this without the noodles as a mango salad (also very delicious). On less busy weeknights we like to pack up our dinner and head to one of Stratford Parks/ playgrounds for a picnic. One of Stratford’s great luxuries are the fabulous parks, one seemingly situated in every small neighbourhood, beautiful manicured and landscaped. We love living in Stratford for many reasons, but our favourite reason is the culinary scene. In this small town we boast many really great restaurants who are fuelled and supported by a plethora of local farmers. These farmers also fill the shelves of several really great small food shops like The Gentle Rain, Linley’s Food Shop , The Little Green Grocery. They also directly sell their fares at a weekly Saturday Farmers market and Sunday slow food market. Our local Chef school students during their summer breaks are employed by local restaurants and if you put your detective hat on, you will come to learn that many of the owners and/or chefs are graduates of the school. The Stratford Tourism Alliance issues a culinary guide every year with all of the local food events, food adventures, food festivals and culinary adventures. Most importantly, Stratford supports it’s community and helps fill the belly’s of those in need and the less fortunate with establishments such as The Stratford House of Blessing and The Local Community Food Centre.
